Chasing the Sunset

Time travel 10 years ago, we had the first iphones and the last Nokias to capture 2 megapixel photos and upload photos to our brand new facebook accounts. Fast forward to today, we have been blessed by countless phones and in fact even reaching 102mp on some Chinese mobile phones. Yet, the sun has remained constant and mesmerizing that everyday is always a new experience.

The answer is simple. Like our lives, the sunset is the most colorful part of the day. It is a culmination of all our experiences as we slowly wait for the chance to capture the right moment before it disappears. And in every sunsets, we find rays of hope. Hope that tomorrow will bring us a new dawn.

Where can I watch the best sunset in the Philippines?

If you are searching for the best sunset in the Philippines, you know that the sun always sets in the west which includes most areas facing the west Philippine sea (formerly known as South China Sea)

Sunset Photography

The best place to take the sunset is always where you are at the moment. If you are on a vacation, find an area where you can sit idle for 30mins and watch the sun slowly set. Make sure you take sample shots ahead of time and practice. If your phone or camera has manual mode, best to use it so you can adjust the exposure and stop relying purely on AUTO / AI mode.

How to find the best spot and take the perfect sunset?

Once you decide where to wait for the sunset, the next thing to do is to find the right spot.

  1. Find a safe and open space where there is no obstruction.
  2. Position your camera where you will get a good subject of the sun and yourself (portrait).
  3. Use a tripod and wait as the sun slowly set. If you don’t have a tripod, you can do handheld but find the right perspective. You can post process and crop unnecessary details later.
  4. Find a good subject. Sometimes a good subject appears when you least expect it
  5. Compose your shot. When taking photos of a bright subject, the foreground will be mostly dark. If you want to take both foreground and background, you can use techniques such as HDR (High Dynamic Range). You can also push the exposure to a higher value but this will in turn increase the brightness of the sun

High-dynamic-range imaging (HDRI) is a technique used in photographic imaging and films, and in ray-traced computer-generated imaging, to reproduce a greater range of luminosity than what is possible with standard digital imaging or photographic techniques. Standard techniques allow differentiation only within a certain range of brightness. Outside this range, no features are visible because in the brighter areas everything appears pure white, and pure black in the darker areas.
